Dear Brothers and Sisters,

I would first like to start by thanking you for your enormous generosity on our Holiday Gift Card Drive 2018. The drive could not have happened without your generosity and support for this event. We received $1,400.00 in gift cards and $400.00 cash to help our either out of work members or our members working out of town. Thank you again for all that contributed. CALIFORNIA STATE PIPE TRADES SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION CONTEST

I am pleased to notify you about a wonderful opportunity for your children. The California State Pipe Trades Council Scholarship Foundation awards college scholarships to sons and daughters of U.A. Local Union members who are in good standing for at least one full year.

1) A high school senior graduating in June and attending a U.S. 4-year college or university during the coming academic year.

2) A full-time community college student attending a U.S. 4-year college or university during the academic year.

3) A full-time student currently attending a U.S. 4-year college or university and continuing full-time attendance during the coming year.

Thirty-two scholarships in the amount of $2,500.00 will be awarded to the applicants. Applications and the required materials will be accepted beginning Immediately they must be postmarked no later than March 31, 2019. Applications must be received within five business days after this deadline. You can find the instructions and download the application on the California State Pipe Trades Council website at www.calpipes.org. Brother Larry Stocker retired in June 2018 with 40 years of service to the United Association and Local 484. Larry was initiated into Local 484 on June 1, 1978. Sister Kellie Harrison retired in November 2018 with 39 years of service to the United Association and Local 484. Kellie was initiated into Local 484 on July 21, 1979. Brother Bruce Jones retired in November 2018 with 21 years of service to the United Association and Local 484. Bruce was initiated into Local 484 on November 3, 1997. Congratulations to our retirees for their dedication and service to Local 484 and the United Association. As always, we wish you a very long, happy, and healthy, well deserved retirement! BURIAL BENEFIT ASSESSMENT A friendly reminder, the $8.00 dollar assessment is due and payable prior to any payment being applied to your monthly dues. The reason for this is many times the benefit is paid to the beneficiary of our deceased brother or sister prior to the members paying the actual assessment. In our ongoing effort to cut back on postage, we’ll continue to use the newsletter and e-mails as our only notice of any death assessment. If you have any questions regarding your payments, please do not hesitate to call us. I thank you and appreciate your understanding on this matter. WORK OUTLOOK I am happy to report the Tri-Counties Building Trades has signed a PLA with the Port of Hueneme. All construction, abatement, demolition, renovation, rehabilitation, upgrade and improvement work and new construction projects to be performed pursuant to or under a contract with the Port, and all subcontracts flowing from these contracts, where the engineer’s estimate prepared by the Port for the cost of the public works construction contract(s) to be procured for the project in question exceeds $250,000.00. Kinetics is starting to get a little busy at Skyworks and are working on a good size project at Amgen building 30, although it is moving slow due to seismic issues. Acco/All Area Plumbing also continues to pick up work at Amgen, they also picked up work at a Church of Scientology in Ventura and a doing both the plumbing and mechanical. They also picked up the plumbing on a new science building at Cal Lutheran University starting in the next few months. Precision Plumbing and Mechanical look to have a lot of work in the coming year. They are looking for supervision, anyone interested please contact the hall so we can put you in touch with these contractors. Murray also has work at Amgen, they also have work at Los Robles Hospital a pharmacy project. A bigger project is to start soon at Los Robles Hospital, Murray is looking into it with DPR as the general. Limbach picked up a good size project at Los Robles Hospital with Layton Construction as the general they were awarded all the piping. They will be doing the mechanical and will be subbing out the plumbing and medical gas, not sure who that contractor will be. Suttles Plumbing and Mechanical is also looking for a new foreman and journeymen service plumbers, again please call the hall if you are interested in a foreman position. Most of their work is in the valley, Bryan Suttles is reaching out to Locals 484, 761, and 78 for supervision. Schultz Mechanical, ARB, Spectra, and Unified Field Services continue to pick up projects through SB54 the statewide PLA on the California Resource Corporation oil leases in Ventura County. A&J TRAINING DEPARTMENT

The weld shop at the Ventura Training Center continues to be open the first Saturday of the month from 7:00 am-3:30 pm and every Thursday night from 5:30 pm-9:30 pm. Please take advantage of the shop for brazing and welding certifications as well as continuities for both. Journeymen upgrade training (JUT), everyone should know by now all Journeymen are required to have 10 hours of training by August 31, 2019 or you will be removed from the job. Make every effort to get your hours completed. As of January 3, 2019, Local 484 JUT hours were as follows 18% of the membership has completed the required hours and 4% have completed partial hours. Let’s get it done, my wish is for Local 484 be the first Local in District Council16 to have their membership fulfill this obligation! As a smaller local we should have no problem doing just that. I continue meetinf with plumbing/mechanical/HVACR non-signatory contractors and strive to maintain a friendly and positive relationship. We have also sent some of our apprentices out to these contractors per the State of California Division of Apprenticeship Standards requirements. Our main goal over time is to show that we have the best training, most skilled workforce and manpower as needed for any project large or small and eventually these contractors signed to the Master Labor Agreement.

As a friendly reminder to all, stay current with all certifications and complete your Journeymen Upgrade Training as soon as possible.

UA Local 484 continues to work on outreach to recruit new and past members through career/job fairs, non-signatory contractor job site visits, posting of recruitment flyers at supply houses, friends and family, etc. Please remember that we are all organizers.

I continue to monitor with the help of membership all Public Works projects throughout the county and open LMCC case referrals on contractors. We currently have thirty-two case referrals submitted and being reviewed at this time. LMCC is a 3rd party agency that audits certified payroll and manpower ratios, so contractors stay in compliance with local, State, and Federal law.

The Local will continue asking all brothers and sisters for your participation at city council meetings, PLA meetings/hearings, political rallies and various labor functions to secure future work. I will also be asking for apprentice and journeyperson volunteers to help with community service work, salting non-signatory contractors and projects. We need members to be active and involved with our regular membership meetings every third Thursday of the month at the hall. Please do your best to attend. The fight is to keep the middle class.

I will communicate on a regular basis with our local signatory contractors and assist them with potential bid opportunities, future projects and upcoming manpower certification needs. We must increase market share with all our good signatory contractors and increase membership if we wish to survive as a Local.
